Metro Curling meeting Minutes - 2023

Season of Play

  • The official ASAA policy states that the Curling season of play begins on October 1st and ends at the Provincial Championship, typically on the first Friday and Saturday of March.

League Structure

  • Fall Curling - WIll be learn to curl and exhibition games. Running for Five to Seven weeks at the beginning of the season. Teams will be comprised of any 4-6 students from a particular school.  These exhibition games will be educational, where the coaches are permitted on Ice to help teach/coach new and old players in game settings. Rosters are fluid, and schools can submit as many teams as they wish.
  • Metro Championships - Girls/Boys/Mixed. Schools can enter 1 team of each designation. Players on these teams MUST have played at minimum 2 nights in the Fall Curling portion of the league to be eligible for a schools Championship team. Teams can carry 6 participants on each team. Championships will be Double Elimination Draws for each category. The Winners of the Metro Championships will be our Representatives for Provincials as well. This will run from the end of Exam break until late February. Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursdays may be utilized to facilitate this draw. Coaching is restricted to game rules during the Metro Championships. (Please note that if you qualify for Provincials, the Boys & Girls teams can only carry 5 participants max so your roster must be adjusted to advance)

FALL CURLING

Play Dates and Times

  • Begins in November and runs until Christmas Break
  • Regular season games begin between 3:45 PM & 4:00 PM.
  • Games are exclusively scheduled on Tuesday and Wednesday, dependent on need and request from schools.

 

Game Rules

  • Regular season games should be comprised of SIX ends.
    • If a game is tied after six ends, play an additional end if time permits. If the game is still tied after the extra end, the tie will be broken by skip rocks.
    • Exception: the bell will ring at approximately 5:15 PM. When the bell rings, teams should finish the end they are in AND play one more end. The game will be complete after that end (if there is a tie in this case, go straight to skip rocks).
  • An end is considered complete when the THIRDS agree on the score for the end.
  • If a team is late for a match, one point per ten minutes is awarded to the opposing team. The late arriving team will throw first rock. If a team is thirty minutes late or more, the game is defaulted. Once the late team arrives, the game must begin immediately, starting with the 1st end, all points received due to tardiness will be awarded at the beginning of the 1st end.
  • Timeouts: one timeout with a maximum 3 minute length may occur only at the completion of the 4th end. Additionally, each team is permitted two 1 minute timeouts per game. Timeouts can be taken only when the team is in possession of the rock in the hack and players must stay on the ice. Coaches coming to the ice must be in appropriate attire and footwear. During the exhibition season play, coaches are able to remain on the ice for the duration of the game, therefore eliminating the need for timeouts. During the seeding games & championships, coaches are only permitted on ice during time outs.
  • Substitutions: during the fall, teams may use alternates to fill in for absent players. There are also unlimited substitutions (between ends) during the Fall season. 

 

Rosters and Eligibility

  • All players must be under the age of 19 as of September 1 of that schol year.
  • Teams can be any combination of gender.
  • There must be a teacher supervisor from each school at all games.
  • Unlimited coaching is allowed until the Championships begin.

 

Standings/Results

  • Winning team is responsible for reporting scores. Scores are to be recored on the Metro Athletics website, contact your AD for login information.



METRO CHAMPIONSHIPS

 

Play Dates and Times

  • Begins after January exams and runs until 1 week before Provincial Championships
  • Games are intended to run from 3:45 PM to 5:45 PM.
  • Games are typically scheduled on Tuesday and Wednesday, but all participants must refer to the posted draws for exact schedule as additional dates may be required dependent on each years calendar.

 

Game Rules

  • Championship Draw Curling games should be comprised of EIGHT ends. An EIGHT end game should take around 2 hours.  Athletes are to play ready curling and complete their shots in a timely manner, as to not delay their opponents, or the facilities scheduled bookings.
    • If a game is tied after eight ends, play an additional end if time permits. If the game is still tied after the extra end, the tie will be broken as follows:
      • Coin toss to determine who throws first. Each team designates one player to throw.
      • Teams may position a broom in the house and sweep their own rock. The opponent is not allowed to sweep.
      • After the first team throws, the rock is measured and removed. The second team then throws and measures. The closest stone wins the tiebreaker.
    • Exception: The bell will ring at 5:20 PM. When the bell rings, teams should finish the end they are in AND play one more end. The game will be complete after that end (if there is a tie in this case, go straight to the above procedure unless Ottewell will permit an extra end).
    • In all matches on the Championship Dates, extra ends will be played to break ties.

  • Mixed Team Rules: mixed teams shall be comprised of two boys and two girls, with alternating boys and girls in the order of play. 6 Total on the team 3/3.
  • Substitutions: the non-playing team member may substitute between or during games for any of the positions (in mixed, a boy must substitute for a boy, and a girl for a girl). Teams may play with three players if a substitute is not available (in mixed, the skip and third must be of alternate gender).
  • Schools are responsible for monitoring hog line violations, and any other violations which may come into question.
  • The Free Guard Zone Rule will be used in playdowns as it has been adopted by the ASAA.
  • ASAA will continue to allow all broom heads – with the exception of hair brooms or broom heads that are “textured, sealed, or modified from their original form” or have hardening or stiffening inserts – this is in conjunction with the 2015 World Curling Federation memo.
  • A team may play with three (3) players with the first two (2) players each delivering three (3) consecutive stones
    at each end. Under no circumstance may a team play with fewer than three (3) players delivering stones. If a
    team plays with three players in the mixed division, the alternate order of delivery must be maintained (M, F,
    M – or – F, M, F).
    If this occurs while a game is in progress, the delivery rotation can be changed to meet this criterion.
  • Each team can have 6 players, however for the Boys & Girls competitions, once a team reaches the Semi final stage, only 5 members may play and continue on to Finals & Provincials. 
  • Players must have played in 1 night during Fall Curling to be eligible 

 

Rosters and Eligibility

  • Rosters must be registered with the ASAA by January 22. The deadline to add players is February 8.
    • Boys and girls teams have a maximum of five players, and mixed teams have a maximum of 3 boys and 3 girls.
  • Eligibility is as per ASAA policy.
  • There must be a teacher supervisor from each school at all games.
  • Teams must continue throughout the competition with their rosters as registered on the ASAA's registration system.

 

Score Reporting

  • Winning team is responsible for reporting scores. Scores must be reported by email only to shawn@metroathletics.ca, ideally the evening of the match or immediately the following morning
