Scona Boys Golf Sweeps Metro and Provincial Championships

2016-10-17

The Scona Boys golf team took home gold in Edmonton and then staged a huge comeback to win Provincials as well!

There is something about team golf that makes it an exciting event.  The point system makes it  interesting and turns up the intensity level.  There is more at stake as you play for yourself as well as for your team mates and your school.

This year, the Strathcona golf team included Kaiden Nicholson, Christopher Otto, Derrick Ushko and William Zapernick.  We won the City Championship on Sept 20 at the Links Golf Course in Spruce Grove.   Earning this title gave us the opportunity to represent Edmonton at the Provincial Championship.  It was a two day tournament in Medicine Hat on Sept 26 and 27.

With warm weather and great conditions, our team got off to great start at the Connaught Golf Club.  We found ourselves in third place after the first round, 8 shots back from the defending champions Barrhead.  We knew it would be challenging to catch the leading team, but we still believed our best performance would put us in contention for the win.  The second day was held at the Medicine Hat Country Club.  Gale force winds along with fast greens made it a very challenging round.  Our team persevered even though each of us struggled on some holes.  In the end, our combined score diminished our individual faults.  After the competition, we all waited in anticipation for the announcement of the results.  We were thrilled to hear that the winning team by a single stroke was Strathcona High School.  This was the first time our school has ever won the provincial golf championship.  It was an unforgettable experience for our team.  The most rewarding part was knowing that we all played for each other and won as a team.
