WP Wagner Warriors Sr. Boys Basketball Team - Div 3 Champions

After a slow start to their season, the WP Wagner Warriors pulled up their socks and went to work.
After a dismal start (0-3) to the 2016-2017 Season, the WP Wagner Warriors Senior Boys Basketball Team made a 180 degree turnaround! They finished the last eight league games with seven wins and one loss, which qualified the team to finish in fourth place with a record of 7 -4 thereby hosting first round of playoffs.
In Game I, Wagner hosted Michaelle Jean School. A hard-fought affair saw the Warriors come out victorious by a score of 59-53. This qualified Wagner to play in the semifinal against the JH Picard Pumas who finished in first place during regular season by going undefeated (11-0). During regular season, the Pumas beat the Warriors by 13 pts. This made the Warrior ‘very eager and hungry’ for a rematch! JH Picard brought out a large, deafening crowd to support their team while Wagner, comparably speaking, brought out about 25 fans. As a result of some very timely shooting and strong defense, the Warriors defeated the defending 2015-2016 champions by a score of 65-57, thereby qualifying Wagner for the Championship Game on March 3.
In the Championship Game, the Wagner Warriors were up against Parkland Immanuel Christian School (PICS) who the Warriors had lost to by 2 points in their regular season matchup. Both schools brought out a large and loud fan base to witness a great game. Wagner’s strong defense, combined with very timely and accurate shooting proved too much for PICS and Wagner was victorious by fourteen points (67-53)!! Wagner definitely peaked at the right time of the season!
The 2016-2017 Senior Boys Championship is the first City Championship (Boys) for WP Wagner since 2006. While Wagner will miss the services of their four Grade 12 student athletes for next season, the remaining/returning six student athletes provide a strong base to welcome those young men moving up from Wagner’s Junior team (Tier III Silver Medalists).
